Heidi Gardner, a “Saturday Night Live” star from Kansas City, has transformed her mid-century modern home into a cozy homage to the ’70s. Featured in Architectural Digest’s “Open Door” series, the home showcases her love for Kansas City and New York, designed in collaboration with Kansas City’s Cicada Company and New York’s Madelynn Hudson.
LIVING ROOM
The living room showcases a stylish ’70s aesthetic with chrome coffee tables and a curvy sofa. Heidi Gardner called it a “curated ‘70s moment”. Nearby, a lounge area features vintage chairs favored by her cat, John Ross. Inspired by her cocktail-making during the pandemic, Gardner created a mini bar in a credenza decorated with handmade tiles by Kansas City artist Emily Reinhardt, offering a cozy, character-filled retreat.
THE MEDIA ROOM
The media room was crafted to evoke a “soft and feminine” atmosphere, according to Hudson. The interior is adorned with wallpaper, complemented by a luxurious mohair velvet sofa and a warm camel-colored floor covering, creating inviting spaces to relax.
DINING ROOM
Gardner aimed to renovate her home for hosting gatherings, from pool days with family to cocktails with friends. She appreciates the extra space and a relaxed atmosphere. Key to this warmth was selecting the right wall color, with Hudson and Davis creating a custom finish for the red oak paneling. Creamy ivory tones in the terrazzo flooring and vaulted ceilings enhance the inviting ambiance.
KITCHEN
In the kitchen, Davis’s team opened up the space, repositioned appliances, and enhanced outdoor sightlines for seamless entertaining. Blond caning on the cabinetry and richly veined Italian marble on the backsplash and counters embrace the ’70s vibe. The highlight? A mirror-tiled range hood that sparkles like a disco ball when lit, bringing the space to life.
PRIMARY BEDROOM
In the primary bedroom, two linen-shaded sconces highlight an elongated bed with striped fabric. A bolster pillow sits on an alpaca coverlet. A cozy seating area features a vintage sofa reupholstered in soft dusty rose Schumacher velvet, complemented by a rattan-wrapped floor lamp and a stylish round side table.
WALK-IN CLOSET
Gardner pays tribute to her mom, whose closet was a source of inspiration growing up. The space blends nostalgia and style with a 1980 chair, a faux zebra rug, and a bullion-trimmed ottoman, creating a playful yet elegant vibe.
